DIY Cricut Gift Ideas
I am falling in love with my Cricut. The opportunities to create home decor and gifts are endless. My husband recently traveled to Europe for a business trip and my son is off at college, so I enjoyed a weekend of crafting. I tried a new technique to make custom wine glasses and I found cute trinket dishes at the Target Dollar Spot. Are you searching for DIY Cricut Gift Ideas? Read on for inspiration, instructions and tips.
Every time I work on a project I get more comfortable using Design Space. I try to use images and fonts I find in Design Space, but have ventured out to other sites to download fonts and svg files. If you would like more information on downloading and using fonts or svg files from other sites, please let me know in the comments.

DIY Cricut Gift Ideas – Projects
Trinket Dishes
These cute little trinket dishes are perfect for rings and earrings. They are easy to make and are a perfect DIY Cricut gift idea. I found the blank dishes at the Target Dollar Spot. They are rough and unsealed, so I will spray them with Polycrylic to make them smoother and ensure the permanent vinyl stays permanent.
Material List
- Cricut Explore Air 2 or other cutting machine
- Permanent Vinyl
- Trinket Dishes
- Gold Paint
- Paint Brushes
- Polycrylic Spray
Creating Designs
The bee and flower designs are available in Design Space. I measured the area of the space I wanted to cover on the trinket dish and created a rectangle the size of my target space. Once I had the target area, I moved the images into the space and resized as needed. When images were the correct size I moved the flower and vines over to the side so I could cut black and gold vinyl in a single run. I did weld the flower and vines before creating the cut.
After the cuts were complete, I weeded out the unwanted vinyl and used transfer tap to remove the vinyl from the backing.
I overlaid the two separate pieces of transfer tape to make it easier to center the design on the dish.
Once I attached the vinyl to the dish, I ran over it with my fingers and a burnishing tool to ensure it was strongly attached. I slowly peeled back the transfer tape and the project was complete. The process from design to product took about 20-minutes. I ended up not painting the rim on the bee trinket dish gold as the gold colors did not match. I saved this accent for my other designer. Etched Wine Glasses
Wine glasses are always a great DIY gift idea for family and friends. You can check out my first Cricut project here. I made my first Cricut custom wine glasses with vinyl Latin quotes. I was a bit concerned about the durability and wanted to give glass etching a try for custom glasses that are dishwasher safe.
You can find stemless wineglasses at a number of stores, including Dollar Tree. I have found better quality stemless glasses at Target or Amazon.
Material List
- Cricut Air Explorer 2
- Cricut Stencil Vinyl
- Stemless Wine Glasses
- Isopropyl Alcohol
- Shop Towels
- Armour Etch
- Paint Brushes
- Painter’s Tape
The first step is to measure the target area on the wine glass for your design. Clean the surface of the wineglass to remove any dirt or oil to ensure the stencil adheres well. This minimizes leaking of the etching cream below the stencil so you will achieve a nice, crisp design. These shop towels are great for minimizing lint.
I used the same design for my glasses. However, since the full design was cut on stencil vinyl I welded the entire design together. The design was cut close to the edge of the stencil vinyl so I used painter’s tape to protect the glass from the etching cream.
After the stencil was adhered and the glass was protected, I used a paint brush to dab on the etching cream. Be careful not to spread the cream under the edges of the stencil. Work the cream around gently for 5-minutes. Apply more cream and work into the glass gently. I repeated this for a total of 15-minutes.
Wear safety glasses and gloves to protect your eyes and skin from the etching cream. Also work in a well ventilated area.
After 15-minutes have passed, rinse the cream away from the glass with water. After removing all of the etching cream, remove the tape and stencil. Viola! You have just made your first custom etched wine glass.
