Bedroom Makeover – Finding Inspiration and Creating a Mood Board

Preparing for our bedroom makeover

It is hard to believe, but we have already lived in our home for 15-years. While we have replaced or updated decor over the years, a full bedroom makeover is long overdue. We currently have a brown color theme, textured paint and a wallpaper border. Very outdated, not to mention we just have too much furniture.

The room is large (14.5′ x 13′) with one south and two west facing windows. This provides gentle light in the morning and I love waking up to natural light when possible. The south window provides a beautiful view of our stream and pond, as well as the municipal building and downtown. The west windows provide spectacular sunset views and colors, along with a view of the Fox River.

Living in a historic home, closet space is limited. Therefore, in addition to our king size bed, we have his and hers dressers along with a glass top table for our TV. The tall vintage dresser was purchased at an antique store in Chicago and the low dresser is from Pottery Barn. We don’t plan to change the furniture or layout, but a surprise or two might happen. Isn’t that always the case when making over a room? The main focus is on painting and decor. I’m trying to use what we have and get rid of things versus buying things we absolutely don’t need.

Inspiration

Classic and Traditional

Drew Scott at Lone Fox shared his bedroom makeover. Check out the article which includes great photos and a link to a YouTube video. What I love? The classic look with lots of light, long curtains, chandelier and gold accents. Just look at that gorgeous, arched window. The green tones are beautiful, especially when accented with plants. The vintage rug pulls everything together and helps the room feel cozy and warm.

Dark Accent Wall

Check out this master bedroom makeover at Home with Krissy. What I love? The dark accent wall. This is definitely a possibility for the wall behind the king bed in our room, which receives a lot of light from the south and west. I also love the use of a carpet on top of carpet. It really adds a lot of great texture to a cool space with a very neutral color palette, as do the patterns on the bedding and bathroom wall.

White and Cozy

Beth Hunter shares her gorgeous bedroom renovation at Home Stories A to Z. She provides fantastic decorating tips and who doesn’t love her adorable dogs? What I love? The warm, creamy paradise with green accents from the plants. The wall, headboard and carpet add texture and interest to the space, making it anything but ordinary.

Blue and Coastal

Kim shares her beautiful bedroom makeover at Sand & Sisal. What I love? The blue, patterned wall paper on the accent wall is gorgeous. Blue accented linens on the bed and bench blanket help balance out the color and really make it pop. The natural grass headboard, blinds and rug and the end of the bed help bring in a coastal ambiance. I love the use of of a light sea glass color on the ceiling versus a traditional white. This really helps accent the unusual ‘vaulted’ ceiling. Again, the use of plants really adds color and texture to the space. Plants are certainly missing from my current bedroom decor. Definitely something I need to add during my makeover project.

Neutral and Peaceful

This light and peaceful bedroom makeover from Nesting with Grace is very close to the design I hope to achieve. What I love? The wall color is very close to the color pallete I have been considering. I don’t want to replace my burlap curtains and table cloth as they are fairly new and I love them. I was concerned they wouldn’t work with this pale green color, but I think the natural colors in this room design look great.

Again, texture plays an important role in creating visual interest in the room. The layered rugs over the wood floor, the woven headboard, fur chair and layered bed lines work together perfectly. However, I don’t think I can convince Pat that we need to include a furry chair. Check out the article for great tips on thrifting home decor.

Dark and Moody

Lemon Thistle shares a dark and moody room makeover. What I love? The dark walls work because of the large windows with plenty of natural light. The dark tones, natural toned fabric and rich wood give me the vibe of Scandinavia or Pacific Northwest. Lots of great travel memories.

Designer in a Binder

No need to hire a designer. Use the Designer in a Binder Workbook from Tasha at Kaleidoscope Living. I purchased this and will certainly be using this resource as I design my new bedroom. So many resources available today are only digital. What I love about this workbook is that you get a hardcopy in the mail.

The Home Depot offers a free Home Depot ProjectColor app. Find inspiration, match colors, find colors and save your favorites.

It’s amazing how technology can help take the uncertainty out of room remodels and renovation. There are a number of apps that are available for a fee, but here’s a list of free virtual room design apps. Give one a try and share your experience in the comments below.

My Bedroom Makeover Plan

I am inspired to paint the walls a light green. Perhaps the same color as the one we used in the hall entering the bedroom. I do have to paint the ceiling and am contemplating adding a gold shimmer to the paint. Is that too over the top? I had also considered painting the faux fireplace black. I might save this decision for the end. I’m not sure it will work if I stick with the combination of the light green and natural tone curtains and furniture. Did I hear chocolate brown is making a comeback? I would like a change the bedding, but maybe it doesn’t all have to go. Stay tuned to see how I can tackle this makeover while keeping the budget in check and reusing as much as possible, while creating an updated ,dreamy sleep sanctuary.
